City Guide: The Best Bars in Bristol

From street artist Banksy, to the famous underground music scene…Bristol is a thriving cultural hub and the cocktail culture certainly doesn’t miss a beat.

Whether you’re looking for a stylish night, a hidden speakeasy den or molecular mixology, Bristol is full of cocktail gems; showing off its unique character and style, it certainly doesn’t go unnoticed.

In 2019, Bristol was named the happiest place to live in the country, so we’ve compiled a list of our favourites and must-visits. From classy to casual, we have found something to suit any occasion – you won’t be able to stay away from this celebrated cocktail scene when normality sets back in for late-night drinking.

Hyde & Co

“A brilliant hidden gem, an experience to remember”

Inspired by New York City’s famous cocktail culture, Hyde & Co is one of Bristols original Prohibition speakeasy cocktail bars. With no signage and a doorbell upon entry this unique, hidden experience celebrates the infamous drinking dens of Bristol – both past and present.

The venue is full of atmosphere and character, with a Great Gatsby, Gentleman’s Club vibe. The award-winning extensive cocktail menus might seem daunting at first, but the friendly staff guide you through and give recommendations like no other.

The London Cocktail Club Bristol

“The single best bartenders you will ever meet”

A twisted Neverland opened with the intention of creating a bartenders paradise! With happy hour every day until 8pm, along with loud music and lavish interior, need I go on? Amazing service and bartenders who go the extra mile.

The cocktails are just as lively as the atmosphere and the garnishes are just as extravagant as the decor. Don’t forget to venture upstairs to discover the secret wardrobe.

Her Majesty’s Secret Service

“Possibly the best cocktail bar I have ever visited”

A James Bond inspired drinking journey, where entry is permitted through picking up a dial phone outside its doors. Behind the mysterious black door, you will discover HMSS, its quirky bar and unusual, fun artisan cocktails.

A uniquely creative menu disguised in a passport and attentive service make this venue next level. One of Bristol’s most popular themed cocktail bars. Expect plenty of unusual ingredients and uniquely flavoured spirits.

Pitcher & Piano

“Impeccable service with amazing cocktails”

This sleek and stylish cocktail bar is for those of you who are looking for somewhere classier to drink in Bristol. A perfect venue that welcomes you from day-to-night. A sophisticated but casual escape suited for every occasion.

Their extensive menu includes classic cocktails as well as great non-alcoholic options. The bar covers two floors with an outdoor area overlooking the waterfront which creates an all around vibrant atmosphere.

Revolución de Cuba

“Drinks were sensational and service was outstanding”

A Cuban inspired paradise found in the heart of Bristol. At Revolución de Cuba you will find live music, samba girls and tiki classics. Their rum-inspired cocktail menu brings bold, vibrant flavours and giant twists on classic cocktails – that are as easy on the eye as they are to drink.

The venue is filled with tropical plants and the colours of Latin America creating a sense of escapism in a fiesta atmosphere. The bar has amazing waterside views with an open fire pit, the perfect set up to enjoy Instagram-worthy cocktails.

The Bootlegger

“The best cocktails I’ve ever tasted”

A contemporary take on the classic speakeasy, this NYC inspired cocktail bar transports you back into the 1920’s. The venue is embellished with Prohibition posters, vintage light shades and exposed brickwork yet, is still modern and classy, with a fun atmosphere.

Their menu has over 90 cocktails to choose from made with locally sourced fruits and botanicals; including their speciality CBD infused connotations. What puts this family-run bar at the top of the list is the live music – supporting both local and international musicians, it really makes the night.

Brozen Bar

“The cocktails are an amazing work of art”

A cocktail bar with a frozen twist. This Liquid Nitrogen cocktail bar combines science, invention and great tasting cocktails that keep your tastebuds entertained. With the aim to put innovation and a memorable experience first, this is a great place if you’re looking to go somewhere a little bit quirky and different.

Your favourite cocktails are made (frozen) in front of you and the drama of the liquid nitrogen always makes it exciting. The staff really make this place stand out, knowledgeable and enthusiastic. Another one of a kind hidden gem.

Bar 44

“Outstanding service – amazing cocktails and perfect atmosphere!”

Sip cocktails in beautiful surroundings at this Spanish inspired bar. The drinks menu is extensive, but the passionate staff give great recommendations of what to go for. Not only are the cocktails amazing, the Tapa’s are just as impressive.

If Sherry is your tipple of choice they have a wonderful selection, and if not, Bar 44 might just change your mind on that. There’s a great buzz and ambience, so if you enjoy high-end top ingredients from Spain, you’ll love it here.

The Florist

“The cocktails were amazing, absolutely beautiful and delicious”

A pretty boutique style venue full of floral displays with an extensive cocktail menu that does not disappoint.

This botanical themed bar is situated in an interesting Victorian building with modern twists. Offering live music and a fresh vibe over three storeys, The Florist fulfils all of your Instagram-worthy cocktail needs.

The Rummer

“Just the best cocktails in Bristol”

The Rummer is a cocktail bar and micro-distillery found in the oldest part of the city. A pioneer of the Bristol cocktail scene, with multiple awards – the venue has well over 500 premium gins, rums and whisky to try. The cocktail menu is varied with a few takes on the classics which are exceptional.

It has a great laid back, relaxed vibe, with a large log fire and comfy sofas. You might also be interested to know that Bristol’s newest gin distillery is located in the basement. This bar ticks all of the boxes.

The Gold Bar

“The most beautiful building with the most faaaaabulous service”

Find classic cocktails with a contemporary twist, surrounding retro furnishings and quirky artwork in this beautiful building. The mixologists are welcoming and passionate – there’s nothing better than getting a sense that they are proud of what they do and where they work!

The Gold Bar goes above and beyond to serve you what you want even if it’s not on the menu. Great for a chilled night, a romantic night or for a classy catch up with friends; they even sell cigars.

Loose Cannon

“We will be returning very very soon. And very very soon again after that”

A unique craft cocktail bar that stands out for its drinks based on pop culture and political references. The drinks here are next level, with so many to choose from. High-quality and inventive, with crazy garnishes and even crazier names.

The decor is quirky, the music is chilled and the staff are welcoming. Found in the heart of the Harbourside, Loose Cannon is one to brag about to your friends.

Kick your night off in style and let your imagination run riot with this crazy, unique cocktail menu, inspired by science. These exciting cocktails are made from ingredients collected from all over the world and allow the bartenders to push the boundaries of molecular mixology.

With flames, smoke and bubbles, create a magical evening to remember through the theatrical cocktails at Aluna. The best way to get a feel for this bar is going to see it for yourself!

The Clockwork Rose

“An experience not to be missed”

A dream destination for cocktail lovers and Steampunk fans alike. This quirky themed bar serves the most eccentric and beautifully presented cocktails, each that come with their own backstory – made with high-end spirits by skilled bartenders.

The creativity is endless and the music along with the atmosphere is amazing. A drinking den for those looking for a night full of fantasy.

Red Light

“A great little hideaway and the cocktails are superb”

Another (literally) hidden gem. Although the entrance is mysterious, graffiti-covered and pretty invisible unless you’re looking for it…entering through an abandoned looking telephone box that you use to call the bar to gain access, what’s not to love?

Once inside, (after passing a promiscuous neon sign) the atmosphere is calm and relaxing created by the candlelit, intimate cellar bar setting. There is a great selection of innovative cocktails, but the bartenders are happy to make any cocktail you want. One for the bucket list.

Flipside Cocktail Club

“Never let down here, the best place for great cocktails and atmosphere”

With the aim to deliver great cocktails and tunes to create ‘the best night out in Bristol’. FCC was awarded Best Cocktail Bar in Bristol by 365Bristol by having knowledge and passion for all things cocktail related.

The drinks are eccentric and served in very creative ways, and you will always find something you fancy on the menu. Bristol has many hidden cocktail bars but on the flipside, if you’re into simplicity but quality and looking for a good time, then this is the bar for you.
