The History Of The Drink

The Measure of Substance cocktail was created at Sidecar in New Delhi, India.


“Measure of Substance was created as a part of our Summer Solstice Menu in collaboration with the Makaibari Tea Estate at Sidecar,” says Sidecar co-founder Minakshi Singh.


“The cocktail is eponymously named after tea production terminology which records the strength of tannins and the liquoring properties of quality teas.”


The drink is a variation of the popular Old Fashioned recipe. However the Bourbon is infused with Summer Solstice, a rare 2nd Flush Darjeeling Tea which was created in collaboration with Makaibari and Sidecar.


Sidecar in-house produced ginger and pepper bitters adds a subtle touch of local flavour.

About Sidecar

True to the vision of the passionate team of master mixologist Yangdup Lama and beverage marketing expert Minakshi Singh, Sidecar was established in 2018.


The artisanal craft cocktail bar takes inspiration from the post-prohibition era.


It was awarded #47 on the list of World’s 50 Best Bars 2021, and #16 on the list of Asia’s 50 Best Bars 2021. In 2019 Sidecar won first place on the 30 Best Bars India list.


The bar is yet another interpretation of a bartender’s bar run by the team behind the multi-award-winning Cocktails & Dreams Speakeasy.


“Our focus has always been towards using sustainable practices, and rare local ingredients to curate a sophisticated cocktail experience,” says Singh.


As you enter the bar, the 30 feet bar stands the hero and is visible from every corner of the room.


As well as unique cocktails, bar bites and American style grilled cuisine rounds out the vibe at Sidecar.


The team also take great pride in their work culture, referring to the bar as “home”.


Apart from being bar industry veterans Lama and Singh also work on a number of different projects including Drinks India Company and Bhumi Farms.

During the Covid-19 pandemic, Sidecar had to adapt like other venues. Relying on what they knew best, the owners invested in education, cross training their team in departments like finance and global bar trends.


“We also adapted to the situation by batching and bottling non-alcoholic cocktails for guests to enjoy at the convenience of their homes,” Singh recalls.


“We launched a consulting vertical of the bar called Drinks India Company to provide our expertise in brand building and management for beverage brands and bars.”


The Sidecar team love Delhi’s bar culture which is filled with other great cocktail bars.


“We love our neighbors and together we build the bar culture in Delhi. Mr. Hoots’, Lair, and PCO to name a few.”


Finally, the duo offers their advice for those looking to replicate success in the bar industry:


“Be yourself. Focus on your strengths in rough times. Plan well and execute to the T to make sure your ship stays afloat.”
